Open Source Architecture installation, India, 2005 Artist: Usman Haque Role: Team member Duration: 2 days |

This experiment in collaboration with design students from ‘Nift-Delhi’ was conducted during the DOORS international conference in 2005. It explores architecture as an open source operating system where a collaborative framework is provided within which people create their own social space. I was involved in idea development and fabrication in New Delhi. The experiment resulted in an exciting habitat(akin to a tent) using found objects (polythene bags used for grocery, recycled handmade paper) and locally available technology (electric table fan). After laying out the design on the ground, air was directed into it and the design stabalised taking an unexpected organic shape. People enjoyed entering the space and customizing it to their needs. Main ideas brought into the mix were: locative media, which provides control structures that one allows oneself to be part of; open choreography, in which content is generated through individual interpretation of prescribed rules for interaction; play and people-centered design, where open systems place emphasis on users as designers and finally low-tech media architecture in which existing technology and spaces are re-appropriated. |
